Hello Everyone,
I've thought about calling the local architects to see if they would do a feasibility test for little to no charge while we are waiting for grant information. Does anyone see a problem with that? I've heard they can be rather expensive but maybe if we get the word out that we are looking for one it will give them time to think about the contribution they could give to their community.
If you know of someone or don't mind calling about it, I don't see a problem with it. Does anyone else?
I called Laughlin Architects on Slate Run Rd. He was very helpful and had a few ideas.
1. He said as far as a feasibility study there would be 2 ways to approach it. One, from a historical view and the other from a bringing it up to compliance view. He stated that we should be careful about going the historical route being that when it is registered as a historical building you can't change much regarding the structure. That could eventually backfire on our mission and we should really look into it before we push for it.
2. A compliance study was already done in 2000. Along with a facility plan overview and a "Master Plan". These are all public records I believe and he called our Director of Facilities Bill Wiseheart to see if these documents were around. He then gave me Bill's # to find out how to get the documents. I spoke with Mr. Wiseheart today and am waiting to hear back from him.
Wow Michele! Good job.
Bill has agreed to come talk with our group. He was out of town last week and this week, we're only having a 30 minute meeting. Maybe we can set-up a time for him next week or the week after.
Why at the top of the website it says June 2010? And Tara's newspaper article the next meeting she said is 7:00 and it's 6:30.
I don't understand why it says 2010 - I was looking into that yesterday and have yet to understand why.
As for Tara's article - I know it said 7:00PM. She tried to call me later that night to confirm the time and I was still up at the church and didn't get her message until the next morning after the paper was already being printed. If we have some stragglers, I think that will be ok - we don't have to rush through the next meeting quite as quickly as we did the last one.
Zack Van Winkle, 11 year old, former Silver Street student,
I'm here to protest against the closing of Silver Street. If they are going to close a school they should close a school thats not doing well. Take Children's Academy for example. They got bad test grades even became a choice school. Then with Silver Street the president just came saying how well we did. I don't think that makes any sense to close Silver Street. Also I was a student there as I said. I left after my 2nd grade year there to go to the Excel class (a.k.a. GT class) at MT. Tabor. A few of my other Silver Street friends also made it to the Excel classes. They have to be teaching pretty good for us to get here. And even though MT. Tabor was nice, and I'm not just saying this, but Silver Street was and always will be my favorite school. It was great.
Also I would like to go to the next meeting for this. Especially the actual school corporation meeting. Please contact me.
Hi NA Zak!
Thank you for your kind sentiments about Silver Street! You are MORE than welcome to come to our next meeting, which will be this Thursday at 6:30PM at Advent Christian Church in the basement.
Thanks. I'll be there.
Zack,
The next school board meeting is next Monday, June 16th at 7:00 at Grant Line Road School Admn Bldg.
once again, ill be there
Kathy (or anyone who knows),
I am sitting here looking over the Resources for Results Meeting Notes. Does anyone know what the "Options" are that are being referred to (option 1-4)?
Amy,
We were trying to figure that out last night.
I was reviewing the notes from the April meeting and their options are listed as A, B, C, and D. I am not sure if those are the same options they are referring to as 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the most recent notes we received or not.
IF they are the same options, and you look at Option 1 as Option A and so forth, it looks as though most of the groups agree with the option that would close Silver Street (I apologize, I don't have the notes in front of me and I am going on memory so I can't remember which option number it is listed as).
We need to find out if they are in fact the same options that are referenced in the previous notes as A, B, C, and D.
Brandi,
Is there someone that I can contact to get that clarified? Do you have the contact info?
I just called Dr. Brooks's office and asked to schedule an appointment. Please follow suit. Let's make it clear that we would like answers and will be holding our elected officials accountable.
Amy,
To my knowledge the only people that would know would be those members that are on the actual Resources for Results Committee. I don't know if there is any way to get that clarified without one of them telling us.
I will continue to go through the notes that we have from the past meetings tonight and see if I can find any clarification. I will post if I find anything.
I know I'm always talking about the west end but all neighborhood schools need to be saved. Silver St. is a great school.
Your community has come together in such an amazing way. You are an example for the rest of New Albany to follow.
Thank you Shirley. I think so, too.
Amy~ There are options outlined in the "packet of information" we gave out week before last.
At 10:15 this evening...someone rang our doorbell on Beechwood Avenue, jumped off of our porch and stole our Save Silver Street sign, but left the stake in the ground.
Dana~
This is very upsetting. Sadly, this happened the last time they tried to close the schools and signs were put out. We will get you another sign.
What a wonderful BLOG!
Very nice job with the set.
I would like to make a small suggestion. When I first came to this site I expected an opening page of "How you can help save Silver" or something to that effect. Then a list of ALL the ways that citizens can contribute.
Along with contact info. such as school boards members, administration address and phone etc.
Thank you anonymous!
Those are great suggestions and we'll get right on that!
When letters are written to officicals why not send a copy to the President of the United States.
You never know what could happen especially if he gets a ton! Have the children write to him also.
