From the Silver Grove Historian, Jim Munford:

There is mention of the school in June of 1916 as being finished. Quote: “Glenwood Place is in close touch with all these large factories and is also within three blocks of the new $50,000 model and up-to-date Ekin Avenue School Building, just completed (finest and newest school house in the city.)” - from an article in the Public Press June 13, 1916. It describes an auction of 67 building lots in the Glenwood Place Addition.

In April of 1915, the New Albany City Council authorized the Board of Education to purchase a plot of ground, 300 feet by 140 feet, at the corner of Silver Street and Ekin Avenue. The purchase price was named at $10,562 and the board was also authorized to spend $40,000 for the erection of the building.

At that time, lots in Silver Grove were usually about 50 x 140 feet and generally sold for about $200 each. Even if the lots were $500 each, that would only be $3000. The person who owned these lots was Conrad Fleischer.

...more to come...

Speaking of history, David and Brandon presented us with some information regarding the Preserve America Grant. They said that New Albany could possibly get up to $150,000 for preservation purposes. Does anyone have any more information on the steps that need to be taken. We could definitely use this publicity for our cause and help our historic city.

Michelle, unfortunatley (for this cause) Preserve America money can only be used for specific purposes related to heritage tourism, and the New Albany Historic Preservation Commission just today sent our detailed grant request to the feds (you have to have a detailed plan beforehand to get any money).

That said, the school might be able to get incorporated somehow into some of the tourism-related programs (signage, part of a walking tour, etc.). Last night, the preservation commission also discussed how we might raise awareness about the school from a preservation standpoint. My term on the commission ends in July, but Vicky Nugent and David Barksdale can keep the group posted.

p.s.- very nice letter in the Tribune!
