With the first Resources for Results public hearing set for Thursday, New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. Superintendent Dennis Brooks told the school board and public Monday what they can expect.

At the school board meeting Monday night, Brooks said once the three hearings are complete, the Resources for Results committee, which is tasked to better allocate the corporation’s resources, will come up with some options for him to consider. He said he would take those and make a recommendation for the school board hopefully by the end of June.

Though he said the public comment portion on potential changes, which could include reworking school district lines and/or closing a school, would not be over.

“I intend to ask [the school board] to seek community input if there is a dramatic change or recommendation,” Brooks said after the meeting.

Brooks said the corporation will advertise the public hearings so that all school board members will be allowed legally, though not required, to go. He also said he expects many committee members to be present too.

At those hearings, Brooks said he will welcome all who come in and Dave Rarick, director of safety and public information officer for NA-FC, will present a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation that gives an overview of the committee’s findings after nearly three years of research.

Each audience member would then be allowed three minutes to comment or ask questions. Brooks said people can also submit written questions on cards that will be provided.

Brooks reiterated after the meeting that no decisions have been made yet.

“We always regret if we caused apprehension,” he said of people fearing that a school will be closed. “I don’t know what the options ... will be. I can tell you that we did not create the committee to close anything.”

He said the issue to potentially close schools came up once the committee started gathering information. He said the committee’s hired consultant, Phyllis Amick, was chosen not because of her work with another Resources for Results committee that closed schools, but because he has known her for a long time and that she has dealt with similar issues, such as reworking district lines. Brooks added that district lines have been a problem for the corporation ever since M.L. Reisz school was closed.

He also said that his secretary will be at the hearings to take notes — like she does at school board meetings.

Brooks said the meetings will start at 7 p.m.

PINE VIEW PRINCIPAL TO RETIRE

Brooks also informed the board that Cindy Green, principal at Pine View Elementary School, will retire at the end of this school year.

Brooks said Green started her career with NA-FC in 1975 as a substitute teacher and has been with the corporation in various roles, including an assistant principal and principal.

He said she understands student learning better than most and that she loves children.

Brooks said he will begin a search immediately to find a replacement.
